Sir Roger L. Easton (April 30, 1921)-(May 8, 2014)

Sir Roger L. Easton was one of the three main inventors of the Global Positioning System (GPS), working with Ivan A.Getting and

Bradford Parkinson. He was born April 30, 1921 in Craftsbury Vermont, retired in 1980 and passed away May 8, 2014 at the age of 93. He went to Middlebury College and attended one semester at the University of Michigan where he received a bachelors degree in physics. The image to the right is a picture of Roger after receiving the NIHF medal.

Career

In 1955 Roger co-wrote the Naval Research Laboratory's Project Vanguard proposal where he was proposing a U.S. satellite program. His

proposal was in competition with two other satellite programs one of which was the U.S. army. In 1957 Roger invented the Minitrack tracking system. The Minitrack is a tracking system to determine the position of Project Vanguard because Eisenhower Administration selected Rodger's program instead of the other two. When Sputnik I was launched Roger extended Minitrack to track unknown satellites. The image to the left is the rocket that launched Project Vanguard into orbit.

In 1959 Roger designed the Naval Space Surveillance (NAVSPASUR) system. The Naval Space Surveillance System is the first system to detect everything that is orbiting Earth. It runs across the 33rd parallel roughly coast to coast. Later in Roger's career, he led the program to create the Global Positioning System (GPS) which he also patented. He also created TIMATION in the 1960s-70s, a time-based navigational system where they launched four satellites, TIMATION I and II (in 1967 and 1969) and Navigation Technology Satellites (NTS) 1 and 2 (in 1974 and 1977). NTS 2 was the first to transmit GPS signals. The image to the right is the NTS 2.

Awards

In 2006 Roger was awarded National Medal of Technology by George W. Bush for his "extensive pioneering achievements in spacecraft tracking, navigation and timing technology that led to the development of the NAVSTAR-Global Positioning System (GPS)" in 20

06. On March 31 2010 Roger was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for his work with TIMATION and the Global Positioning System and he was given the NIHF medal for those works also.
